Flanagan Lawrence

The design of the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, designed by Flanagan Lawrence Studio, is a personal project that aims to give it a different mood and location from its current site in Cardiff, Wales.
The focus was on the creation of internal spaces with high acoustic performance and theatrical functionality, as well as their integration into the urban environment. It included a chamber concert hall and open-air theatre, as well as teaching and rehearsal spaces.
The building, consisting of three new structures and one renovated one, presents a unified façade but clearly exposes the different internal functions.
The use of warm, tactile materials such as stone and wood was emphasised, and natural ventilation elements were incorporated for the public areas.
